Variants - Transportation made-to-measure
Each of our customers has to meet very specific challenges in his day-to-day work. And as these demands are becoming larger by the day, there are numerous Vario chassis variants to meet them.
- Payload of approx. 3.0 t to around 4.6 t, depending on body and weight category
- Payload of up to approx 3.8 t. depending on model and weight category
- Payload of up to 3.9 t
- Also optionally available as all-wheel-drive version
- Depending on body/superstructure, up to 4.6 t payload
The Vario doesn’t only earn bonus points on account of its size – it is quite simply one for all.
With its robust ladder-type frame the Vario chassis is the ideal base for special body requirements
It combines the advantages of a light truck and typical van characteristics such as low frame height and optional access to the load compartment from the cab.
Ask your authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer to advise you about tailor-made vehicle solutions for special operation or special-purpose bodies - for example for dry freight / standard box body or insulated / refrigerated box body.
A great many body manufacturers  offer diverse special solutions, which can be precisely adapted to your requirements and the nature of the vehicle operation.
One would have to look really hard to find a truck or van application not covered by a Vario.
With a fully laden van, the top speed is less important than knowing that the necessary tractive power is there when you need it. Here the different high-torque Vario diesel engines are particularly impressive.
The further developed four-cylinder diesel engines, featuring direct injection, exhaust gas turbocharger and charge air cooling, provide the 813 D and 813 DA (4x4) with 500 Nm of torque to give them lots of pulling power from low revs. The more powerful variant of this engine, with 115 kW (156 hp) and torque of 610 Nm, is designed for the 816 D and 816 DA (4x4) models.
Of course all the engines meet the requirements of the EURO4 standard thanks to the new BlueTec® diesel technology, and are equipped as standard with an NOx sensor for emissions monitoring.
No matter what you have to transport – the Vario’s rear-wheel drive delivers the torque of its diesel engine effortlessly to the road.
The Vario model variants equipped with permanent all-wheel drive are particularly helpful for work on construction sites, in horticulture or landscape gardening:
because the engageable off-road ratio ensures greater pulling power off the road and is ideal on unprepared roads or on roads covered in snow or ice. In addition, the rear-axle differential can be blocked to increase traction. With this drive, nothing much can stop you.
When designing the interior we concentrated on providing sensible solutions to relieve driver stress and offer passengers a relaxing, comfortable journey.
The well laid-out dashboard with clear, non-reflective instruments, the driver’s seat, adjustable in a number of ways, and an efficient heating and ventilation system relieve stress and help the driver concentrate. Thanks to the large windscreen, visibility is excellent; thanks to power steering as standard, the driver is in full control.
And as many as 7 persons, including driver, can easily be accommodated in the optional crewcab. The comfortable seats which relieve the strain on the back, offer all the occupants excellent support.
A high-performance heating and ventilation system provides a pleasant work atmosphere. In addition, an air conditioning system  or an auxiliary heater with time switch are optionally available.
We have simply never let anything slow us down when it comes to the scope of safety equipment offered.
The Vario features a dual-circuit compressed-air hydraulic brake system with automatic brake adjustment, automatic load-sensitive brake pressure control (ALB) on the rear axle and internally-ventilated disc brakes with ABS anti-lock brake system all-round.
And if the worst should come to the worst, the optional driver’s front airbag  in conjunction with belt tensioners will protect you.
BlueTec® is the forward-looking SCR diesel technology from Mercedes-Benz: a convincing solution, in economic and ecological terms, enabling your Vario to meet the Euro 4 emission standard
The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust gas aftertreatment technique is the only technology that permits the necessary reduction in emissions while optimising engine performance and fuel consumption.
The BlueTec® system comprises state-of-the-art engines with enhanced peak pressures to improve combustion and reduce particulates. Other system components are a catalytic converter and an AdBlue tank. The AdBlue additive is simply obtained from a pump at a filling station and carried in a separate tank. A metering unit feeds it into the exhaust gas, whereupon the heat turns it into the ammonia needed for the chemical reduction in the catalytic converter. There the nitrogen oxides are converted by catalytic chemical reaction into ecologically harmless nitrogen and water.
